…made with the arm extended or retracted up to 30 degrees. The Bullseye 6 works with all rotating lasers; provides 360-degree reception; allows a choice of accuracies; and is self-contained, permitting quick mounting and easy shifting to another machine.

Leica offers its MC200 Digger automated machine-guidance system for excavators, which allows the operator to dig quickly, accurately and on-grade from inside the cab - minimizing the need for workers in the trench. An LCD display panel indicates the bucket position in real time, relative to the desired finished grade. The Learn & Dig feature allows operators to set up multiple profiles within the cab, which allows for more flexibility on the job. A height warning for low and high elevations is built into the system.

Novariant's new Logic7D(TM) Excavate system was designed to boost the productivity of excavators by providing accurate, realtime positioning of the machine's bucket teeth. The system empowers equipment operators by displaying the grade and location of the bucket without the need for survey stakes. In addition, excavation can continue when a survey crew is not available, at night or in blinding conditions. Logic7D Excavate is powered by Novariant's new 7DDuo(TM) GPS Receiver, a dual antenna roof array that determines position and orientation of the machine, and a rugged touchscreen display that was specifically designed for the…

…Go Wrong: A Guide to Fixing Kitchen Disasters. The latter article did contain a few good tips.

Bottom line: Scanty, spotty information that makes it hard to zero in on what you might want; too many dead-ends mean this site does not live up to its promise.

Grade: 2.5

Favorite fact: A brandade is "a creamy pure of poached salt cod, mashed potatoes, cream, olive oil, and ample amounts of sauted garlic. The mix is usually about half salt cod and potatoes and is indigenous to the south of France."

Sponsor: JDV Online LLC, a division of the Career Education Corp., which owns and operates the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Academies of North America.

Highlights of offerings: Fat and Calorie Calculator; Safety Tips (buying, storing, preparing); Herbs and Spices guide; lots of Martin Yan; good article on cooking with eggs.

Pluses: Good selection of quick-and-easy recipes; information about wine, including wine-and-food-pairing tips; thorough and useful food safety information.

Minuses: Many of the articles are more about food than how to cook them or develop skills. Skip the "newsletter," which is really just a link to the site. Herbs and Spices guide is scanty.

Bottom line: An interesting, worthwhile site for foodies, but not a substitute for cooking classes.

Grade: 2.5

Favorite fact: Nick Fluge offers weekly bits of culinary history and wisdom. Did you know that acquiring a source of ginger was one of Christopher Columbus' main goals?

"If you're going to do anything in terms of presenting to clients, you want a bigger screen, at least a 15-inch display," said Justin Jaffe, a CNET senior associate editor. "For contractors, manufacturers actually offer a class of notebooks called 'ruggeds.' They're reinforced and their emphasis is on durability.

"They're quite a bit more expensive, but if you're on a construction site ... you have to realize notebooks are fragile equipment and the ruggeds might be a better investment," Jaffe said.

Look for a notebook with a Pentium M or Pentium 4 processor and at least 512 MB of RAM. Also, be sure that the notebook has a graphics card with 64 MB of dedicated memory.

Finally, invest in a good, long-term warranty. A notebook is generally useful for three to four years before it becomes obsolete, and many manufacturers will extend the standard one-year warranty for corporate customers. In fact, always contact a manufacturer if you're planning to purchase notebooks in bulk became companies often will custom-configure notebooks at a discount to suit a business' needs.
